  4. Do Not Accept Checks: Personal or business checks can be forged or bounced.

  5. Verify the Person: Confirm the buyer or seller’s name, address, and phone number through independent sources.

  6. Keep Records: Save all correspondence—emails, listing details, letters, and payment receipts.

  7. Trust Your Instincts: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is—avoid it.

Recognizing Scam Attempts

Most scams have one or more of these warning signs:

  • The person is abroad or traveling internationally.

  • The person refuses to meet in person.

  • Payment is requested through Western Union, MoneyGram, or checks.

  • Messages contain broken language or poor grammar.

  • Texts appear copied and pasted from other listings.

  • The deal seems too good to be true.
